Agriculture is a major aspect of Valheim, as it produces many food products that increase both your health and stamina. I will try to give you all the information on how to cultivate a field and where to get seeds for your farm fields and gardens.
What is needed to start farming
To get started, you will need the following essentials:
- Cultivator
- Fences
- Seeding
- Beehives (optional)
The Cultivator will be available after killing the first boss, Eikthyr. You need 5 Core Wood and 5 Bronze to be able to craft it. Next, you’ll want some fences, which are designed to protect your crops from the monsters and animals that will eat them.
how to find different seeds in valheim
Before you can begin though, you’ll need some seeds in order to grow your crops. Seeds can be obtained in a variety of different ways, including:
- Onion Seeds:
- Found when exploring abandoned huts and chests in the Mountain biome.
- Carrot Seeds:
- Found when exploring the Black Forest biome.
- Turnip Seeds:
- Found when harvesting Turnip flowers in the Swamp biome.
How to Set Up Your Farm
You will want to put up fences or palisades to protect the cultivated soil, because monsters can destroy your crops by making the seeds unrecoverable or animals will eat your crops if they are not protected.
As for the best protection then the best option will be palisades then we will be sure that nothing will destroy them. Although it does not look aesthetically pleasing it is worth it before we protect our house with a wall against various monsters.
After placing the fence(balisade) around the planned farm, it is time to plant the seed. If you are setting up a farm right after killing the first boss, the most beneficial crop you should plant is carrots. To be able to plant carrots, you first need to have seeds.
Carrot seeds are located in the Black Forest biome and you can simply harvest them for your farm. However, in order not to search for the seeds each time, you should plant them so that the next crop will give you another 3 seeds.
To make your harvest more consistent, you’ll want to create another small farm or expand your current one where you simply plant more plant seeds.
During the first few harvests, you should focus on getting seed plants, as this will prevent seed shortages in the future. Each seed plant produces 3 seeds, which means you can plant 1-2 of them as actual crops and reserve the rest as seed plants.
Keep in mind that this seed planting strategy only works for crops, because for trees, you just plant them and hope that the seeds will drop after cutting.
Conclusion
That’s all you need to know now. Although just taking care of your farm seems boring, it’s a nice change from fighting monsters. Remember to take a look when you return from a long trip, because it is possible that your crops are already to be harvested.
